That Little Voice - Thanksgiving

I love it when things come together as planned. I’m referring to my philosophy of
‘having my Thanksgiving dinner and eating it too’. This translates to: I ate until I was stuffed, and I didn’t have to cook…anything, unless you count making iced tea as cooking.

Thankfully, my kitchen is well equipped with appliances that I have never used. There are two ovens, a microwave, large refrigerator, dishwasher and of course a stove top. They all work, so I’m told. The kitchen is large enough to accommodate 3-4 adults at one time, so when folks come to visit they find everything is working order and plenty of space to spread out.

It is amazing that food preparation occupies the minds of so many people. They really get into cutting up things, beating things, whipping things, mixing things, tasting things, and then cleaning things!

A friend told me of his aunt who believed (as do I) that when guests come, the hostess should not be in the kitchen preparing food, but rather entertaining her visitors. This particular aunt would prepare food prior to the guests’ arrival and put it in the ‘ice box’.
This included breakfast.

She would cook the eggs, bacon, toast, and potatoes, put them on a plate, store them in the refrigerator, and pull them out the first morning of your stay. He recalls there was nothing quite like day old fried eggs that have been kept cold. Try heating those us in the oven!

I admit pre-preparing breakfast is a novel idea even for me, and I won’t take up that practice (my family is delighted to hear that). I’ll just wait until folks arrive and turn over the kitchen to them. They can fix their own breakfast, or I do know where the local restaurants are located.

It was a delightful Thanksgiving with lots of talking, laughing, eating, cleaning, and game watching, and everyone was okay with me just sitting around entertaining them as they worked their buns off!
